Author Timothy A. Weeks had one of his busiest months ever, making 35 presentations at 30 public libraries across four Gulf Coast states, along with readings at three summer camps and signings at six bookstores.

With the BP oil spill impacting the Gulf Coast, the Wise Mullet did his best to bring joy to boys and girls unable to enjoy fishing and the beach.

Wearing his white shrimping boots, Weeks’ tales thrilled kids as the Wise Mullet survived hurricanes and dodged alligators, redfish, pelicans and cast nets. His storytelling was accompanied by projected illustrations of the Gulf Coast and old fishing photos, along with a cast net demonstration. Prizes were given away, including autographed books. Weeks’ mother and illustrator, Jeanne Weeks, accompanied him on the last week of visits.

Weeks kicked off the tour in Hancock County (MS) at the Kiln Public Library, home of football star Brett Favre. He also visited eight libraries in the Jackson/George County system (MS), including Pascagoula and Ocean Springs. In Alabama Weeks made 13 presentations at nine Mobile County libraries, as well as stops in Houston County (Dothan) and Baldwin County (Fairhope). In Louisiana Weeks visited 10 libraries in five parishes (Jefferson, St. Tammany, Assumption, Vermillion, St. Marys). Weeks finished the tour at the Taylor County Public Library (FL).

Special storytimes were also held at the John Calvin Summer Camp in Metairie (LA), the St. Michael Special School in New Orleans, and the Walter Anderson Summer Camp in Ocean Springs (MS). Weeks’ also found time for booksignings at three Barnes & Nobles (Dothan, Metairie, Mandeville), two Borders bookstores (Metairie, Panama City Beach) and Sun Dog Books (Seaside).

The Wise Mullet is making his first ever trip to North Carolina. Author Timothy A. Weeks and illustrator Miss Jeanne will be sharing Goldie’s Search for Silver with over 2000 students at five schools in four days (April 20-23). The first stop is Kenansville Elementary on Tuesday, April 20, followed by Harrells Christian Academy on Wednesday. Thursday finds the Wise Mullet in Wilmington, stopping at St. Mark Catholic School for the morning and Saint Mary Catholic School in the afternoon. On Friday, students of Beulaville Elementary will experience the adventures of the Wise Mullet.
The presentations will be exciting and fast paced, with younger students using their make-believe mullet to jump over alligators and splash into bayous. The author will also be talking about the craft of writing with older students, and how childhood fishing adventures with his father, Captain David, served as inspiration. They will also explore the similarities and differences between coastal communities of the Atlantic and Gulf Coast. (North Carolina students want to know about alligators! The author wonders if North Carolina students know about mullet?) Miss Jeanne will demonstrate how stick figures evolve into illustrations, and how a computer is used to blend her paintings with the author’s photos. An interactive cast net demonstration concludes each presentation, followed by a booksigning period for students wanting autographed books.

Next month, the Wise Mullet makes his first ever trip to Texas. Bookings are still available for the week of May 17-21. Contact the author today if your school wants to join Gilmore Elementary (League City) and Pine Drive Christian (Dickinson) in the fun. It’s a great way to end the school year.

Hurricanes, alligators, redfish, Cajuns with cast nets–the Wise Mullet is back with his greatest adventure yet! To celebrate we’re offering author visits this spring that’ll suit any budget. Because we know funds are tight this year, and we want to share our new story with as many students as possible.

Dramatic storytelling, gorgeous illustrations, Character Ed values, and the author’s love for the Gulf Coast make these tales perfect for AR celebrations, heritage awareness, Family Reading night, or any other time of the year. So how about an unforgettable presentation of Goldie’s Search for Silver that will inspire your students to read and achieve?

In 2009, we presented at over 100 schools and 20 public libraries, and we plan on an even busier 2010. We’ve already booked 18 schools this spring and 40 public libraries this summer, so don’t wait. Call or email today and save up to 50% off our normal $320 fee for a half-day visit, depending on the date and distance of your school. To see which dates we’re available, just click on our calendar at the top of our webpage.
